Power to the Patients: Solving the NHS’s Need for Protected Power
It’s a challenging time for people, businesses and organisations across the UK. However, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted one organisation far beyond any other – and that’s the NHS.
Tens of thousands of people across the UK have now died with coronavirus, including more than 100 NHS staff and other healthcare workers. While healthcare workers are risking their health and safety while working on the frontline, they also carry the constant worry of being overwhelmed if admission rates rise too quickly.
During this unprecedented time, preparation and continuity are critical. Hospitals and healthcare facilities require a significant supply of power to continue daily operations, and it’s never been more vital for officials to invest in protected power solutions to ensure continuous care.
That’s why NHS England and NHS Improvement recently issued a national patient safety alert stressing the importance of providing uninterrupted delivery of high flow nasal oxygen (HFNO), when transferring a patient to a different area of the hospital. The alert follows four recent deaths and aims to protect babies, children and adults with acute respiratory failure without hypercapnia who go onto HFNO support.
While some HFNO devices have a transport mode, most require mains power and will not deliver oxygen during transfer unless attached to a compatible uninterruptible power supply (UPS) device. Even a brief interruption to the delivery of HFNO could lead to respiratory and cardiac arrest, and consequently death or disability, noted the alert.
Protecting Patients with Protected Power
As evidenced by the NHS’s patient safety alert, continuously powering equipment on mobile medical devices is crucial to patient safety. At Optec, we can help you ensure continuous power delivery to HFNO delivery devices and other mobile medical devices with medical-grade UPS systems from Tripp Lite.
Tripp Lite’s UPS medical-grade UPS systems allow mobile medical devices to travel with patients throughout hospitals and long-term care facilities. For mobile medical devices without a built-in transport mode, Tripp Lite’s medical-grade UPS systems provide safe, reliable power during transit, ensuring that therapy continues without interruption.
With lithium-ion batteries, the UPS systems support up to 10,000 charge cycles (compared to 500 cycles for lead-acid batteries) and weigh 60 percent less than typical lead-acid counterparts, making them easier to transport. Tripp Lite’s medical-grade UPS systems also include built-in Faraday shielding to provide full line isolation, which limits cumulative leakage current of connected equipment to less than 100μA for safety and code compliance in patient care vicinities.
